Homemade Churros with Chocolate Sauce

This is DELICIOUS! I got the inspiration to make this sweet treat when I moved to London and discovered this great food blog called: ‘Poires au Chocolat‘. I skimmed through the pages, admiring the well presented, wonderfully taken photos and the detailed recipes. And then all of a sudden, Bang! There it was, staring at me in the face, telling me to make those Churros!

And So I did! Try it out – it’s soo finger licking good and oh so addictive! Best eaten fresh otherwise the Churros loses it’s amazing crunch.

Ingredients (batch is enough for at least 2-3 people to share):

140ml Water
55g Unsalted Butter (cut into cubes)
Pinch of Salt
1/2 tbsp Brown Sugar
60g Plain Flour
1 Egg (beaten)
1/2 tsp Vanilla Essence
Oil to fry

Coating (to taste):

Approx. 30g Caster Sugar
2 tsp Ground Cinnamon

Chocolate Sauce:

75g Chocolate
100ml Double Cream
1/2 tsp Ground Cinnamon
1/2 tsp Sugar

1. Make the Churros mixture by melting the butter in a pan with the water, salt and sugar.

2. On a low heat, add the flour and mix well until it forms a shiney ball. Remove from the heat for a few minutes to cool.

3. Add the egg and vanilla and beat again to form a mixture like this:

4. Transfer the mixture into a piping bag. If you don’t have one like me at the time of making this, then use a freezer zip bag and snip off the end of one corner.

5. Get a plate with kitchen towel ready to soak up any excess oil from the fried Churros. In a pan, heat the oil. On a separate plate, mix the sugar and cinnamon together for the coating and then you are ready to watch the churros come to life!

6. Pipe the Churros mixture into the oil carefully to any shape or size of your preference. As I wasn’t using a proper piping bag, mine ended up looking a little worm-like!

7. With a slotted spoon, turn the churros around to fry both sides until golden brown (the darker they are, the crunchier they are. But once they go black – you know you’ve burnt them! :P). Take them out the oil when ready and place on the kitchen towel for a few seconds and then add and mix to the sugar and cinnamon coating.

8.  Repeat the process in batches until you use up all the mixture and it looks a bit like this:

9. Making the Chocolate Sauce is so easy! Chop the chocolate up. Heat the Cream, Sugar and Cinnamon up in a pan until nearly boiling and remove from the heat. Add the chocolate into the mixture and stir a little to combine it all and then let it melt. Finally, stir it until it looks glossy and pour into your dipping pot or bowl.

10. Ta Daa! Your Churros is complete with Chocolate dipping sauce! And most importantly – enjoy with friends otherwise you feel really guilty afterwards! 🙂

    1. Hi Kerry! Yes they were seriously delicious and most certainly tasted like doughnuts! But next time I make them, I think I will use a proper piping bag with a star nozzle to create the ridges – it will completely transform the taste! Do give it a go! 🙂 From Sheepa.
