Halloween Pumpkin Cake Pops – Chocolate Orange

After pondering for ages about the second item I wanted to make for the Halloween potluck party, I suddenly had a eureka moment!

The Mummy Oreo Pops I’d made were cool, so I wanted to do something similar but with a twist.

That’s when the genius idea came to me. I’d recently gone to the Cake & Bake Show 2012 at Earl’s Court in London and my flatmate and I had been very lucky in getting ourselves a ‘few’ amazing freebies…

OK so maybe we got more than a few freebies! *smug face* Just don’t ask me how we lugged all of this home. But since then, I’d been thinking to myself  ‘what am I going to do with all of this!?’ and so this was a brilliant idea!

I decided to make pumpkin cake pops using the orange flavoured Silver Spoon chocolate buttons with a chocolate flavoured cake filling.

I was limited for time, so decided not to bake the cake myself and bought the Madeira Cake from Tesco instead as I found this method was far easier and better value for money (only cost £1).

Ingredients (makes approximately 12):

1 Madeira Cake (Serves approx. 8)
2 tbsp Cocoa Powder
1/4 Can of Condensed Milk (approx 100g)
2-3 Packets of Orange Flavour Buttons (approx 200g-300g)
Handful of Chocolate Chips
12 Cake Pop Sticks

1) Crumble the cake to form a fine crumb texture. The only reason why I didn’t use a chocolate cake in the first place is because I couldn’t find any in this form – they all were ‘sandwich’ style cakes. If you find a chocolate version or decide to bake it yourself – skip the next step.

2) Add the Cocoa powder and give it a mix. Then add the condensed milk and combine. At this point you will need to use your hands to bind and then roll into balls.

3) Make the cake pops to the size you prefer. I found that with the amount of cake I had, I could make 12 at a decent size.

4) Melt the orange flavour buttons in the microwave in 10 second bursts and stir after each time. It should take around 50-60 seconds in total to melt to the right consistency, but make sure you do not do this all at once.

5) Take the cake pop stick and measure up against the height of the cake ball to see where the half way point is, then dip that much into the orange chocolate.

6) Push the stick halfway down into the cake ball as shown in the picture below. Once all are done, place in the fridge for 5 minutes to allow the chocolate on the sticks to set with the cake balls .

7) Remove from the fridge and dip each cake pop into the melted orange chocolate, making sure to cover it evenly. Let the excess chocolate drip off before gently placing on a tray covered in greaseproof paper.

8) Once all are covered, carefully place the tray in the fridge for 10 minutes to allow it to set. Whilst this is happening, melt a handful of chocolate chips in  the microwave in 10 second bursts, stirring each time for a total of 30-40 seconds.

9) Using a re-sealable food bag, place the melted chocolate into one corner once slightly  cooled and snip a small bit off the tip. Remove the cake pops from the fridge and pipe on faces of your choice. Place back into the fridge for 5 minutes to allow the faces to set.

10) Enjoy!
